In a blow to the notion of meritocratic government, applicants to the Justice Department’s internships and Honors Program were widely rejected if their resumes included the names of liberal groups on a departmental blacklist, the Washington Blade reports.

In the summer of 2002, Michael Chertoff, then head of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, green-lighted the technique known as waterboarding, and offered assurances to the CIA that its interrogators would not face prosecution under anti-torture laws if they followed torture guidelines approved by the Department.

In 1983, the Justice Department prosecuted a Texas sheriff and three of his deputies for waterboarding prisoners to get them to confess to crimes.

Army soldier who was allegedly forced to attend fundamentalist Christian themed events and sued Secretary of Defense Robert Gates claiming his First Amendment rights were violated should not be permitted to seek relief in federal court because he failed to take his grievances to his superiors, the Justice Department said in court documents.
