Alarming as the climb in unemployment is, the growing duration of joblessness is more worrying still.
Americas army of long-term unemployed ? those without work for six months or more ? swelled to 5.4 million, according to todays figures.This is roughly equal to the combined populations of Los Angeles, San Diego and Sacramento.

The worst U.S. recession since the Great Depression will probably end in the third quarter, but uncertainty exists over the speed and duration of the economic recovery, according to the most recent survey of private economists.
